GL1200F Under Construction

I just chopped into my 1984 GL1200 standard in the hopes of transforming it into my vision of an “F” model opposed 4. I have a CB750F fuel tank, side panels, and shortened tail section. The top trellis of the frame will be cut out and replaced with a new backbone structure. The rear sub-frame will be chopped off with a slim and tidy sub-frame in its place. I have a USD front end and Brembo brakes all around, and I have coil spring rear dampers to replace the rear air suspension.

This is the starting point. A great all-around bike, with 42,000 miles on the odometer. Overall, I feel like the Goldwing is a little thick in the middle. My main goal is to focus the visual weight around the engine and give a lighter feel to the rear end. I want to try to capture the feel of a bobbed early superbike – a little lower and a little shorter in the back but with similar lines.

This killer CBX gives you an idea of the look I am going for.
At this point I am fully committed the GL1200F project, as the grinder has been put to metal on the GL frame. There is no turning back now. Stay tuned.

This is the kind of genre crossing build that really gets my attention. It’s built to do everything a motorcycle should. Go like a scalded dog, Stop on a dime, Handle like it’s on rails and have attitude for days. Pulling cues from MotoGP, Cafe Racer, Brat and Stunt Bike genres it hits The Apex at full lean. “Nothing Sacred” GL1200

I have had this project on the back burner for way to long, three years now, and now it is hanging around my neck like the proverbial albatross. I have to admit, even though I have been charged by my uncle with creating a cool custom out of his Goldwing, it has been a little hard to get my head around chopping a super clean Goldwing, the last of its kind. You see the 1984 GL1200 Standard was the last Goldwing produced by Honda sans fairings.

That being said, “Nothing Sacred”  is going to be a low down combination of Muscle Bike/Minimalist Bobber/Old School Superbike when it is finished. The plan is to strip her down to the bare essentials, give her a sexy new rear end, add a conventional gas tank, and a mean as hell stance. Lets call her a GL1200F.

The pressure is on now, as I’ve made a commitment to ride her to Flagstaff, Arizona in July for my family reunion. I have stripped the bike down to the rolling Chassis with the power plant. It is time to start chopping the frame up to allow fittment for the new fuel tank and the shorty rear subframe.

Like I said, this is one clean Goldwing with 42,000 miles on the odometer. She has never been down and all the pieces that have come off are in pristine condition.
